French drains are dug around the perimeter of your basement so when water comes in it is trapped at the edges. The water then flows along the drain and into a sump ( basically a lower area of the drain where water is allowed to gather harmlessly).

The sump pump is automatically activated when the water reaches a certain level sump and it pumps the water away, leaving your basement dry and mold or odor free.
